About Dienten

Apartment Sonnberg Dienten in the heart of the Hochkoenig valley at the foot of the Hochkönig mountain (2943m). The town was first mentioned in 963. Since the Medieval age, there was an iron mine in the Dienten area which was abandoned in 1864. The iron red of the Hochkönig glows bright in the early morning and afternoon sun.

At the far end of the village is the Dienten Church, situated high above the town where it has presided for over 500 years.

Dienten facilities


With around 800 inhabitants, Dienten is a rural village where agriculture and ski tourism in winter/mountain exploring in summer are its main industries. Along with several hotels, a variety of rental apartment concepts and numerous home host options, guests in Dienten are well served by:

  • a comprehensive 7 day supermarket
  • a newsagent/tobacconist
  • a local bakery and cafe to ensure all daily needs are met
  • plus several good restaurants and bars

State-of-the-art lifts and ski services

In the past few years the mountain lift and gondola services in and out of Dienten have been completely renewed. The state-of-the-art lift station quickly and easily transports you in either direction onto over 150km of groomed pistes in winter. In summer, the lifts carry you high up to the cosy and authentic huts and restaurants for mountain dining and wandering.

The Zentrum station is also served by Porti Sport for all your equipment needs along with ticket office, tourism bureau and restaurant.

In the heart of the Hochkoenig valley Salzburgerland

Dienten is located in the Salzburg Pinzgau region not far from the picturesque regional capital of Zell am See and only 45 minutes from magical Salzburg city.

Leaving the A10 from the direction of Zell am See, you enter the Hochkonig valley via Bischofshofen and pass through Mühlbach to reach Dienten. Onwards past Dienten through the valley you will reach Hinterthal, Maria Alm and finally Saalfelden at the valley end.

Restaurants and bars

Located in town you will find a host of restaurants both free-standing and in the hotels including a variety of traditional restaurants offering all the Austrian and alpine favourites Just beyond the church, we recommend taking a walk up to the Grueneggalm—not only great food, but the meal is capped by the complimentary sleds provided to slide your way your back down the rodelbahn at the end of your meal.

Across the kinderpiste (childrens slope) adjoining our house here, in the area known as Brundl, you will find Brundl Stadl bar and restaurant—a favourite après ski bar on the way home for many of our guests. A sun drenched terrace is perfect for a ski pause, lunch or after ski celebrations.

There is always something happening party or music wise in the valley. Notices around the town or on the in-house notice board will keep you up to date. The Tourist office will also guide you.

In summer, plenty of Alms and Huttes are open on the surrounding hillsides to walk to and enjoy their local fare, kneed many featuring local musicians and cultural offerings.
